Today, Christmas Day 2010, we are doing a soft launch of the site (a Beta launch) to share a brilliant Christmas story by Chad Kimball that deals with family (of course), Mississippi (again, of course), war vets’ protruding eyebrows, a horse, and a lot of food. It’s exactly the type of story I dreamed of publishing when the idea for Pubs for Plebs first came to me a little over a year ago. I knew my friends had talent, and I wanted to help them find the audience they deserved.
The last twelve months have been full of blood (not really), sweat, and tears (a lot of tears) as I taught myself to build a website and then proceeded to conjure up Pubs for Plebs. If you wondered where I was on any given weekend night, this goes a long way to explaining my absence from normal social life. I’m ecstatic to finally be able to get this thing public and moving forward.
So first and foremost, make sure to read Chad’s story. It’s what the site’s all about in the first place. When you’re done, poke around and check out what Pubs for Plebs will have to offer when we do a full launch toward the end of January. Read about the Free Stories, Featured Stories, and High School Stories on the Stories main page. Click the About link to learn the Pleb vision (and what a Pleb is, if you don’t already know). Chad and I are the only writers listed under our Authors section, but take a look at how we plan on showcasing Pubs for Plebs writers and their work. If you write and want to join our community, read our Submission guidelines and our FAQ Publishing With Us section to see what we offer.
We’re already making arrangements to enhance the experience of the site, including plans to offer audio of authors reading their stories, as well as visual interpretations of stories, whether simply an author reading at a local function like the Poison Pen Reading Series, or a local filmmaker’s adaptation of a work featured here.
We love stories and have big plans to facilitate our favorite ones finding an audience. We hope you’ll help us by spreading the word. Make sure to click the links in the sidebar and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and our RSS feed to stay updated on Pleb news. If you come across any errors or links that don’t work, please tell us. The site is essentially still in Beta testing, so we’re working out some kinks (including the fact you can’t see the stories when you access the site using an iPad).
Thanks for coming by. And being you. You’re awesome.
Nathan Nix
