Chad Kimball was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1981. He was quickly shipped off, with his family, to Turkey and later to Germany. His father was in the U.S. Air Force. He didn’t have his first experiences in the U.S. until the age of ten when the military moved them to Alabama. He recalls experiencing mass culture shock, which he still feels plagues him at times. At the start of high school, the family moved to Houston, where he currently resides.
He started college majoring in Architecture with full intentions to finish, but after coming to the realization that money meant very little to him, his enjoyment for it fizzled. He instead elected to study music. In 2005 he moved to Hollywood, CA to study drums and percussion at Musician’s Institute.
After graduating, he moved back to Houston. It was at this time he developed a desire to write. He began writing short stories mostly for personal enjoyment, or as he calls it, “Practice.” He has no real training as a writer, beyond high school and college level requirements, and still claims he doesn’t understand grammar. “English is full of unnecessary rules and words,” he says, “but it‘s fun to play with.” Once he had completed several stories and gained a reasonable amount of confidence, he began sharing his work with close friends. These days he is eager to share it with whoever wants to read it, and hopes to continue writing stories for a long time.
While an avid writer and musician, Chad also spends much of his time drawing, painting, wood carving, and knife making. He is a devout organic gardener and natural building enthusiast. He is also fascinated with the tools and craftsmanship of yesterday and hopes to continue to learn and study them. “There is nothing a few hours of chopping wood won’t solve. And you get to stay warm.” he claims.
